One of the challenges facing new young sailors is the availability of boats for practice and racing. Many clubs have junior boats available to members such Optimists, Toppers and RS Teras. Some even offer Lasers with various rigs. However should those young sailors wish to travel to DYS race events at other clubs the logistics of transporting boats can become too great an obstacle. Ultimately we would encourage budding sailors to own their own boats to ensure consistency and continuity however DYS does recognise the problem mentioned above.
Most of the clubs hosting DYS events allow sailors to borrow boats. These are primarily Toppers and Optimists however some clubs may also offer additional classes.
Please bear in mind though that once a competitor has entered an event they may only change that class in accordance with the Boat Change policy. For more information please refer to section 7 of the Notice of Series and the Rules for Boat Changes
Normally each club would request a donation towards a maintenance fund and this will vary from club to club. In order to encourage young sailors to travel to events at other clubs, DYS will make the donation to the club on behalf of the sailor at their first event attended away from their own club. Applications for this must be made to the secretary by clicking here. The club running the event would be available to assist with rigging should you be un-familiar.
Please don’t let the lack of a boat put you or your child off travelling to other clubs. Travelling gives your child the opportunity to sail on different reservoirs and lakes, even a river, which will help them gain confidence and improve their all round sailing ability, along with it being great fun. If you require more information regarding the hire of boats please contact your local rep who will be able to provide more information and assistance. Numbers are often limited to it would be worthwhile contacting the reps in good time prior to each event.
